Mother’s Day is May 9, so get ready to do something special for your mom. 2020 shook up a lot of our lives. Mothers have had to choose between working and childcare, food and diapers. Schools were closed and virtual putting teaching on moms who were not equipped but could not afford a tutor.
We are so quick to judge but do not know another’s struggle. To the moms that are doing their best and putting their child’s success above all else, I salute you. Keep doing your best to find the resources you and your child needs.
How Do Us Moms Do It!
We are sometimes the full-time parent or a single mother doing it all alone. Our family is too far to step in and provide extra support. We may not know anyone and spend all our time in the house as a full-time stay at home mom.
So many scenarios of moms having to be the backbone of the family. Sometimes we feed into the superwoman stereotype, that we must do for everyone else while neglecting ourselves. This is far from the truth. While we have the energy and endurance to persevere through almost anything, we still need a break from it all.
How Can I Make Mother's Day Special?
Listening and paying attention to what your mom needs or wants. Most of the year we are doing what needs to be done. How about doing what you truly want.
What is one thing your mom has always wanted or wanted to do but couldn’t for one reason or another? It doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive just thoughtful.
How Covid-19 Affects Our Celebrations
The coronavirus is still out there infecting people and taking lives of loved ones. We can still celebrate but do it safely. Wear masks or practice social distancing, limit attendees, and only invite people you know are being safe as well.
You may not be able to enjoy a meal at your favorite restaurant or certain hotels or resorts may be booked up. Some states still have restrictions on traveling.
2020 into 2021 is forcing us to get creative with how we give gifts, spend time together, and enjoy our favorite activities. I want to take a family vacation so bad but have to keep in mind some things are still closed and I’m still not comfortable having my children around a lot of people.
How Can I Spend Mother's Day At Home?
This is what a lot of us are having to do. Is it ideal? No. Do I wish I were doing something better? Heck yes. It’s OK though because I am a homebody and enjoy my peace. I understand not everybody feels this way.
The best way you can spend Mother’s Day at home is by creating a peaceful environment. You can set up spa stations. Take a relaxing aromatherapy bath. Sprinkle a cup of Epsom salt with some lavender and chamomile essential oils into your bathtub. Relax for up to an hour. Put on soothing music or affirmations and you are set. Follow up with a moisturizing body oil and you will feel good as hell.
If that’s not your thing go buy you some plants and flowers. You hang them up, put them in a vase, or get dirty and plant them in the ground. Plants liven up the place and look so pretty. I got a late start with plants so it’s never too late, even if you don’t have a green thumb. (like me lol)
Do something fun with the kids. I’m thinking of using our ice machine for the first time and make Icee cups. It may stay warm so set up some water play. Or go for a walk in the park. Get out of “do” mode and just “be”.
You can also hold a small get together with family and friends, crack open the grill. Sit on the porch with a couple mimosas and enjoy yourself.
What Do Moms Really Want For Mother's Day
I am listing below 10 things you can do for mom on Mother’s Day. These ideas are easy and cheap. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to show your appreciation. There are moms who still appreciate something handmade.
10 Things You Can Do for Mom on Mother's Day
- Hire a cleaning or laundry service.
If there is one thing moms hate to do it is cleaning and laundry. We get the job done, and sometimes use it as a release when mad. In the end we still don’t like to do it. It would be nice to have someone come and do all the deep cleaning and give us a break.
2. Watch the children.
What we really need is a break from the chaos. Not just a couple hours either, we grown. Hold them overnight so we can enjoy ourselves that day and get a good night’s sleep. Mom will be so relaxed and refreshed and actually happy to get her babies.
3.Write a poem.
It’s true women love poetry, not all, but most. I know I do and have always wanted to go to a spoken word event. It doesn’t have to be perfect just pour your heart into it and tell her what a special lady she is.
4.Make her a gift.
You know what else moms love? Saving money. So how about taking the time to make her a gift. You can do an edible bouquet. A T-shirt with her favorite quote. Something to help her stay organized. The possibilities are endless and do not have to be hard. Put up that bookcase she hasn’t gotten to yet (speaking for myself).
5.Cook her favorite meal and serve it to her fancy style.
This is not old school this is facts. What woman don’t love to eat. You serve her favorite meal like a hostess at a 5-star restaurant she will remember this moment forever.
6.Buy her clothes.
Throughout the year we moms sacrifice a lot. We may go without buying ourselves something new for years in order to make sure our children have the best. Take this time to buy her a nice, and comfortable, outfit with shoes to match.
7.Wash and condition her hair.
I’m giving you all the free game. Especially if she is natural, please set aside time to wash, condition, and detangle her hair. If you really love her, you’ll oil her scalp too.
8.Write a thank you letter.
Moms do the most and get the least credit. Show her how much you appreciate everything she do. Throw in some positive quotes, affirmations, or verses to keep her inspired. We like to know our sacrifices are seen.
9.Buy her essentials for her spa day.
Bath bombs, body butter, body oils, sugar scrub, face mask, nail polish, Bath&Body works, with all the good smells.
10.Plan a weekend getaway.
This will cost but it is so worth it. Be aware of travelling restrictions due to Covid-19. It can be in a different city, different state, or different country. Whatever you do make sure you know where to eat and activities to do.
