What does fear or being afraid look like for you? Is it paralyzing or crippling? Has fear caused you to give up on your dreams and settle for less?
There are benefits of going after what you want that outweighs fear.
I would live life just searching for a way to survive. I would not take any risks or go against the grain so as not to agitate anyone.
I was too afraid to go after what I really wanted.
I was letting fear run my life instead of me. We as human beings are biologically designed to experience fear as a safety mechanism. It tells us when to fight or flee. When you are constantly led by fear you experience high stress that may be difficult to come down from. You can become stuck in comfortability, stagnant, causing you to never reach your full potential.
That is why you should not let being afraid of something stop you from going after what you want. In order to stop living in fear you must find the root cause of it. 1 in 4 people these days are diagnosed with a mental illness, majority being diagnosed with anxiety.
Fear is sometimes an illusion. We make up reasons to be afraid and they block reasons why we should not. You miss opportunities by not going after what you really want. What events took place that shaped your perspective on fear? Were you taught to keep your head done and do just enough to get by?
How To Stop Living In Fear
- Determine the Source
- Think logically. Is this fear tangible or unrealistic? Spend time self-reflecting what is causing your fear
- Recognize that life does not happen to you, it happens for you. Stop blaming outside forces and take control of your actions and reactions.
- Stop the excuses
- Excuses are a defense mechanism we use to avoid facing our problems. When living in fear, excuses feel safe. You will only stay running in place instead of moving forward. Are you truly where you want to be in life?
- Turn your should into musts
- Successful people deal with fear, but they do not let that stop them. They know the real fear is living a life where they settled or compromised what they really want. Sacrifices. You will do whatever it takes to get what you want.
- Adopt a growth mindset
- People often give up on what they want because things get challenging and they believe their goal is beyond their abilities. It is unattainable. Successful people adopt a growth mindset, they do not quit, they try harder or a new strategy. They keep looking for a solution.
- Pain is an insightful teacher
- Obstacles should force you to reflect on what works or did not work. Reflect on what you now truly want. We are built to adapt when faced with adversity.
- Practice self-care
- Do things that make you feel loved and powerful. Try power pose. Do something physical. Get fresh air. Mindfulness meditation, yoga, and creating a morning ritual combat anxiety and depression. I wrote on ways to find time for self-care in this blog post.
- Know that failure is inevitable
- You will fail. Failure is just part of the process. You must use failure as a tool to grow your mindset. See what new strategies you need to implement to gain success the next go round.
Now you know you can manage fear and change your perspective on fear.

Fear is a normal part of life. Fear should be accepted and used as a motivator. The fear of what if. This should propel you to go after what you want even when you are afraid. We face challenges and obstacles throughout life. Some thrown to steer you off course. You have a destiny to fulfill. You cannot give up for fear is only temporary. What do your want? No really, what do YOU want? Not what mom and dad said is best. Not what your friends are doing and want to bring you alone. Not what a celebrity or YouTuber says. That little voice inside your head that tells you “I’m scared but life wouldn’t be right if I didn’t go after what I want”.
In what ways have you gone after what you wanted, even when you were afraid or unsure of the outcome? Remember, all you have to do is start.
As Always,
Be You Confidently
